In December 2008 we reported the allegation that a Merseyside Police Officer was a member of the far right group, BNP after appearing on a leaked BNP membership list.

Well, Merseyside Police promised to investigate the matter and their misconduct panel has dismissed Constable Steve Bettley after concluding that he had knowingly been a member of the British National Party (BNP) from March 2007 to March 2008.

However, in determining their findings the panel confirmed there was no evidence that Constable Bettley had ever displayed any racist views or discriminatory behavior in the workplace.

A community press release from Merseyside Police stated "The panel determined that Constable Bettley's membership of the BNP was a clear breach of lawful orders and police regulations as the party's views are incompatible with the duties and values of the Police Service."

"The Force expects the highest standards of integrity and professionalism from all our staff and the decision of the panel reinforces this. Throughout this process the Force has consulted with the Black Police Association and the Independent Advisory Group", the press release continued.

Deputy Chief Constable, Bernard Lawson said "Merseyside Police prides itself on the good community relations which have been built up with our diverse communities and we will continue to work with all of our staff and communities to promote equality, build positive relationships and improve our service delivery."

Vinny Tomlinson, Chair Merseyside Black Police Association said: Vinny Tomlinson

"Merseyside Black Police Association will not celebrate the dismissal of PC Bettley but nor do we weep. It concerns us that we had a colleague who supported an organisation that espouses such hateful and divisive views. This episode is clear and demonstrable evidence for the need of the supportive and challenging role of the Black Police Association, not least for as long as such people move amongst us."

"Racism and inequality damages all of society and not just those who are directly on the receiving end of it. Merseyside Police has a statutory duty under The Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000 to promote good relations between different racial groups. We believe that if we all honour this, the work environment will be such that those supportive of bigotry will be exposed and either leave or be dismissed. Our aspiration is to contribute towards creating an environment whereby such people will not seek employment within the police service at all."
