The Merseyside Black History Month Group is pleased to announce that Kanya King, CEO and founder of the MOBO Awards, will be attending the 6th Annual Black Achievers Awards which will be held on October 9th, St George's Hall, Liverpool.
Kanya King MBE is an internationally recognised entrepreneur and innovator in the British music industry. She is the dynamic force behind the MOBO Awards and has played an instrumental role in elevating black music and culture to mainstream popular status in the U.K.
Earlier this year Kanya announced Liverpool as the host city for the 2010 MOBO Awards in association with Lebara Mobile. This year the annual awards will be celebrating their 15th birthday on the 20th October at the Liverpool Echo Arena.
But before that, Kanya will also be attending the Merseyside Black Achievers Awards as a special guest of the Merseyside Black History Month Group and will be presenting the Legacy Award to an individual, group or organisation whose contribution to Merseyside’s economic or social enterprise development within Black communities will leave a significant legacy for future generations.
Over the last 15 years MOBO has showcased and honoured some of the music industry's finest talent with performances from diverse UK and international artists including Rihanna, Amy Winehouse, Tina Turner, Jay Z, Destiny's Child and Sade.
After the a
mazing success of the 2009 MOBO Awards in Glasgow, fans began vying for MOBO to come to their hometowns. Once such fan was 17 year old Ben Osu who ran an online facebook campaign to bring
the MOBO Awards to Liverpool. The page quickly garnered nearly two thousand supporters and Ben was there in person to watch the MOBO baton being passed on to Liverpool as the host city for the 2010
Awards.
Kanya King said, “We are all very excited about celebrating MOBO’s 15th birthday in Liverpool and bringing the Awards to this vibrant city recognised for its outstanding contribution to music, culture and creativity. We have some incredible plans for this year’s event and we’re particularly looking forward to working with the City and implementing the BeMOBO Award as a regional initiative for the first time to honour some of the region’s unsung local heroes.”
Merseyside Black History Month Group Chair, Sonia Bassey said, "It is great news that the MOBO's are coming to Liverpool and indeed that Kanya King will be attending the Black Achievers Award. The Merseyside Black History Month celebrations are amongst the best in the country so it is fitting that we are able to attract influential people like Kanya to attend our events."
